„Случаят с Третата сила” от Цветина Цолова
The Christmas Book Fair is a favourite place for many
Sofia residents. It's full of excitement, laughter, and, of course, lots of
books. At the latest such event, with the help of Artline Studios, something new
and intriguing appeared on the market. I remember clearly the moment when I
found out that "The Case with the
Third Power" would be presented at the fair - it started with a gasp
and continued with:
"A new fantasy by a Bulgarian author?!?!"
It's clear that things didn't end with this
exclamation.
Grigor is a student at Sofia University who comes
across a real find while searching for an apartment – affordable rent, close to
the Rectorate's building, fully furnished with everything he might need, and surprisingly,
a lot of old books in the living room. As the boy soon realizes, someone
already lives in the apartment, and by signing the lease agreement, Grigor
unwittingly acquires a ghost as a roommate. Thus begins Grigor's adventure, as
he transforms from an ordinary boy who never experiences anything exciting into
a hunted esper – a person with supernatural abilities – and an unofficial
member of the local ghost club.
All of this, along with a menacing prophecy that is
about to come true, would be a bit too much for anyone. It's a good thing that Grigor
doesn't have to deal with everything by himself!
I'm sceptical when it comes to picking up a book by a
contemporary Bulgarian author, especially when it comes to fantasy. However,
books like "The Case with the Third
Power" prove to me that my preconceptions are unnecessary and
unfounded.
I really enjoyed the book – the writing style is light,
with plenty of humour, and the plot, as well as the characters, are well
developed and dynamic. I enjoyed the portrayal of Stella, the typical ladies
from the administration, as well as the character of Ivan, who solves all his problems
with beer - I'm pretty sure everyone has at least one such friend. I also liked
the friendship between Grigor and Zlobi [1](as one of the characters calls the Ghost), the fact that "Omicron" takes on a whole new
meaning here, and so on. The story is captivating, and while reading, one
involuntarily thinks of situations or people they have encountered themselves.
I didn't expect the ending, which is both good and not
quite so. This ending is suitable for a story that is intended to be continued.
Considering all the positives of the book, this is definitely a good thing.
However, I wish the window left for continuation was... smaller and not so widely open than it actually
is.
In conclusion, I would recommend this book to any
fantasy genre lover without hesitation! "The
Case with the Third Power" is a fast-paced read and well worth the
time invested. I eagerly await the next part of the story!
